A more sustainable future and the fight against global warming hinge on sustainable forestry. Indeed, wood-based products are growing fast, replacing almost anything made from oil.

Aside from the positive environmental impact, investors can benefit from protection against inflation, attractive valuations and a growth outlook based on the green transformation of multiple industries.

As the transition to a sustainable 'bioeconomy' accelerates, strategies such as Pictet Timber are poised to benefit. Here are four reasons investors are optimistic about the sector:

1. Rising prices: the start of 2021 has been exceptional for wood product prices, which have reached record-breaking levels not yet reflected in our portfolio company valuations.

2. The American housing market is returning to a historical average of 1.5 million new homes per year, boosting the largest lumber market in the world.

3. Demand for paper-based packaging is booming, driven by the acceleration of e-commerce during the pandemic and the consumer 'war on plastic'.

4. Wood is increasingly replacing oil as a feedstock in biofuels, biomaterials and in innovative applications such as viscose for clothing or lignin-based cathodes for batteries.

Join Pictet Timber Senior Investment Manager Mikael Jafs and Product Specialist Gillian Diesen for an introduction to the Timber asset class for new investors, and to hear more about why investors can't afford to forego an allocation.

A changing investment landscape: the next five years

Our 8th Secular Outlook, explores the trends we believe will have the greatest impact on financial markets over the next five years. Whatever their vantage point, investors will find there is no escaping the pandemic’s effects. For the most part, the health crisis will reinforce or accelerate trends that were already unfolding in both financial markets and the economy. Even so, it will still change the way countries are governed, businesses are run and people live their lives.
